When it comes to style horizontal plank fences have replaced the vertical and picket fencing of yesteryear. These recycled fence boards should make for very strong siding. Add 1 2 inch of distance between planks for an open look that permits a breeze. These boards were previously used with the bad sections cut out.

In our case we took 16 foot long fence boards and divided our fence perimeter into even sections leaving about seven and a half feet from centre to centre of each post. Or choose tongue and groove planking for maximum privacy with no gaps. Use a level to make sure the top board is horizontal. Instructions on hanging a gate on the fence if desired.

With a horizontal fence you need to really plan out your post spacing which will in large part be based on the length of your horizontally oriented fence boards. Use planks of varying width ex 2 inch 4 inch 6 inch to create visual interest. Use exposed dark metal posts for a rustic modern look.

To do this hold the spacer board in place and fasten your next board on the ends then remove the spacer board and repeat as you fasten more boards. For the siding we used standard 1 x6 x5 8 8 foot fence boards.
